What is a Men's Shed?

Men’s Sheds are a community version of the backyard shed that have long been a part of Australian culture.

For its members, a Men’s Shed is a place to connect, a community to belong to and a group of like-minded mates sharing knowledge while working shoulder to shoulder.

At the Taylors Hill and Melton Sheds, men aged 26 years and over come together for activities such as woodworking, gardening, bike riding, walking groups and health and wellbeing events.

But it's the social aspect that brings the greatest pleasure, which comes through loud and clear in this videos about our local Men’s Sheds.

Melton City Council's Men's Sheds are located in Taylors Hill and Melton and provide opportunities for men to come together in an informal and relaxed setting.

Student Program

Melton City Council Men's Sheds Student Program sees local sheddies mentoring primary school students as they navigate a workshop for the first time.

Over the course of the five-week program, groups of six students learn about tools and safety while forming friendships, as they create small projects they can take home.

And the benefits appear mutual.

As one sheddie comments about the program, “They’ve never seen tools before and never done anything like this before. So they’re getting something out of it, we’re all getting something out of it.”

2024 Australian Men's Shed Regional Gathering

Melton City Council's Men’s Sheds in collaboration with the Australian Men's Shed Association (AMSA) delivered the Australian Men's Shed Regional Gathering in April 2024. Representatives from nearby men's sheds attended the event including Moorabool, Sunbury/Hume, Diamond Creek, Riddles Creek, Moorabbin, Gisborne, Maryborough, Merri-bek, Strathmore and Glenroy.

Approximately 50 guests enjoyed a BBQ breakfast at the Taylors Hill Men's Shed, hosted by the 'sheddies', before taking a tour of the shed itself. Attendees then travelled to nearby Taylors Hill Youth & Community Centre for the official opening of the event including a viewing of the highly anticipated Melton Men's Sheds short films (viewable on this webpage) and several other workshops.

2024 Postcards Feature

Channel 9’s Postcards visits all corners of the State to share the best of Victoria with their viewers, and in June 2024, they visited the Melton Men’s Shed to see what happens there and to chat with some of the Sheddies. Renowned Chef and Postcards presenter, Shane Delia made his first visit to a Men’s Shed and was blown away to see the impact they have on the blokes who attend.
