About the Melton Public Cemetery

Serving the community since 1861, the Melton Public Cemetery is the only official cemetery to have existed in the City of Melton.

Originally administered by a trust, the cemetery transferred to Council’s control in 1922 and is currently managed by Council's Engagement & Advocacy unit.

Services we offer:

  • purchase of cremated remains memorial site
  • interments
  • assistance with locating and/or identifying graves or cremation memorial sites
  • assistance with purchasing of bronze memorial plaques 
  • maintenance and ground improvements.

Please note:
Melton Cemetery has no burial sites left for the community who require a burial site for a recently deceased loved one.

More than 300 burial plots that have been pre-purchased remain, along with over 100 ashes interment sites, however burial plots will cease to be available at Melton Cemetery once the remaining sites are used.

The Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (GMCT) has developed a Master Plan for a new memorial park in Harkness. The 128-hectare site will be the largest cemetery developed in Melbourne for more than 100 years and will provide our local community with a number of interment options. Timelines for the first stage opening of the memorial park will be announced soon.
