Waste education

Our Waste Education officer engages with the community through a range of events, programs and partnerships to influence positive waste and recycling behaviours.

Programs and services are provided to schools to better educate our younger generation in waste and recycling, which seeks to encourage them to make sustainable choices well into the future.

For information on talks, presentations, tours or worm farms contact us via resourceeducator@melton.vic.gov.au.

Schools and Community Groups

Presentations and talks about waste and recycling can be given on site by Council's waste educator and can be tailored to suit your needs. Presentations are given free of charge (budget permitting). Interested schools and community groups are welcome to contact us via resourceeducator@melton.vic.gov.au

The Resource Smart Schools initiative is all about encouraging sustainability in schools, which means real savings for your school budget and the environment, as well as hands-on environmental learning for students of all levels. For more information contact Environment Education Victoria on 9341 8175 or email: resourcesmart@eev.vic.edu.au

Teachers

There are many readily available resources for teachers.

  • Planet Ark has a dedicated RecyclingNearYou website
  • The Story of Stuff by Annie Leonard has original and sequel videos to get you thinking about the real cost of consumerism. Fast-paced and engaging for primary age upwards.
  • The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a man-made phenomenon, largely made up discarded plastics. We recommend viewing for ages six and up due to its stark visual impact, and that the video clip be supported by discussions with students about what they can do to make a positive environmental difference
  • Keep Australia Beautiful has a focus on community action to address litter within communities
  • Other environmental resources, including incursions and excursions arranged by Council, can be found on our Environment and sustainability webpages.

Council's Bin Inspection Program gives great recyclers the chance to win each month.

If your kerbside waste and recycling bins are inspected and you've recycled right, you could be our next winner. If your bins are inspected you will have a tag on your bin. If you have a 'happy' tag your household has been automatically entered into our monthly draw. All winners will be contacted by council. Thanks again for recycling right.
