Intercultural Cities

Melton City Council has made appreciable inroads in the area of diversity and interculturality. Council commits to joining the Intercultural Cities (ICC) network to share resources and information with other cities globally under its Intercultural Plan 2017-2021.

Council is now the second city from Australia to be part of the Intercultural Cities Program - joining over 120 Cities across Europe and beyond (Japan, Mexico, Canada, Morocco and Israel). The program proposes a set of analytical and practical tools to help local stakeholders through the various stages of the process.

The Intercultural Cities program supports cities in reviewing their policies through an intercultural lens and developing comprehensive intercultural strategies to help them manage diversity positively and realise the diversity advantage.

The Results of the Intercultural Cities Index presents comprehensive analysis of Council’s initiatives and highlights strong and positive aspects of the work carried out by Council as a local government organisation.

ICC is a flagship program of the Council of Europe. The Council was founded in 1949. It is the continent's leading human rights organisation. It includes 47 member states, 28 of which are members of the European Union. All Council of Europe member states have signed up to the European Convention on Human Rights, a treaty designed to protect human rights, democracy and the rule of law. The European Court of Human Rights oversees the implementation of the Convention in the member states.

Intercultural Cities Australasia Symposium 2019

As part of the Intercultural Cities Australasia Summit 2019, we were pleased to host the Intercultural Cities Australasia Symposium on Wednesday 31 July. It was attended by over 250 delegates. Keynotes Irena Guidikova (Head of Division, Council of Europe) and Kristen Hilton (Victorian Human Rights Commissioner) were joined by diverse speakers from the Institute for Economics and Peace (Sydney), International Storytelling Centre (Tennessee, US), and several Victorian and local initiatives to deliver an engaging and informative programme.

This symposium was part of a three day collaborative summit delivered with Australia's two other Intercultural Cities - City of Maribyrnong and City of Ballarat.
