Work Experience, Placement and Volunteers

If you are a student living, working, or studying in the City of Melton, our libraries are a great place to gain work experience.

Placement opportunities are available throughout the year, subject to availability. All applications are considered on merit. You may be required to attend an interview as part of the application process.

Placements may be completed at either or both of our branch locations in Melton and Caroline Springs.

Year 10 Work Experience

Work Experience opportunities for Year 10 students are available throughout the year at selected times. Students who complete their placement at our libraries will work with professional library staff in a busy and vibrant environment and gain practical experience in:

  • Customer service
  • Digital literacy
  • Time management and organisation
  • Working as a team
  • And so much more! 

Applications have now closed for our 2024 work experience program and all students have been notified of the outcome of their application.

Structured Workplace Learning (SWL)

SWL placements are available for students enrolled in VET Business, Information and Communications Technology and/or Community Services.

Applications are managed through the Future Connect contact form.

Tertiary Placements

Our tertiary placement program provides Information Management and Library Studies students the opportunity to gain real-world experience in a public library environment.

Participants will work through a program that is tailored to their individual needs and interests, including the chance to undertake independent project work. Students will be guided by experienced library staff to perform regular duties such as:

  • Customer service
  • Digital literacy support
  • Circulation and reference work

And lots more.

Tertiary placements for 2024 are full. We are now accepting applications for 2025.

Volunteers

Melton City Libraries offers young adults the opportunity to work with the community.

To volunteer, you must be undertaking voluntary service through a structured program such as a school initiative, the Duke of Edinburgh Award, Scouts, or Guides.

You must be able to commit to a minimum of one hour per week for a maximum of one full school term.

Voluntary hours must be completed on the following days:

  • Wednesdays at Caroline Springs Library and Learning Hub (no vacancies for 2024)
  • Thursdays at Melton Library and Learning Hub (no vacancies for 2024)

All participants must be covered by relevant agreement forms and Public Liability Insurance.
