The BIG Summer Read is back!

1 December 2024 to 31 January 2025

These school holidays, we challenge you to get reading for your chance to win BIG.

There are two ways to play, with both online and paper challenges, and amazing prizes for each!

What is the Big Summer Read?

The Big Summer Read is an annual state-wide reading challenge for kids and young people. Read books and complete fun activities for your chance to win amazing prizes!

Who can play?

The challenge is open to everyone aged 0-18 who lives, works, or studies in the City of Melton. You will need a Melton City Libraries membership card to enter.

What do I need to do?

All you need to do is read 10 books between 1 December and 31 January. Yes, audiobooks and graphic novels count too! There are two ways to play.

To enter the paper (local) prize draw:

  1. Visit Melton or Caroline Springs Library and pick up an activity booklet.
  2. Read 10 books and write down the titles. Complete all 9 bonus activities for an extra entry into the prize draw. You’ll also get a reward for each activity you complete!
  3. Fill in your details on the front cover of the booklet and hand it in to a Melton City Libraries staff member.

To enter the online (statewide) prize draw:

  1. Visit readbooks.com.au/bsr and register for a free account.
  2. Read 10 books and log your reading online.

ENTER THE ONLINE CHALLENGE

Entries for both challenges close on Friday 31 January 2025.

Winners will be chosen at random and will be notified via email or phone by Wednesday 12 February 2025.

Both challenges are optional. You may choose to enter the paper (local) challenge only, the online (statewide) challenge only, or both!

What are the prizes?

Prizes will be based on your age.

  • One lucky reader aged 0-5 years will receive a one-year Zoos Victoria membership.
  • One reader 6-12 years will win a one-year My Creative Box subscription.
  • Two winners aged 13-18 years will each receive a $100 digital gift card to spend as you like!

If you choose to enter the online challenge, you will also go into the draw to receive a curated book pack, thanks to Public Libraries Victoria!

FAQs

Do I have to do the online AND paper challenges?

No, both challenges are optional. You can enter either one or both.

What is the difference between the Statewide and Local challenges?

The Statewide challenge runs online via readbooks.com. To be eligible to win, you must create a readbooks account and log your reading online by Friday 31 January 2025.

To enter the Local challenge, you must collect an activity booklet from a Melton City Libraries branch. Log your reading in the booklet and return it to Melton City Libraries by Friday 31 January 2025.

Winners for the Statewide challenge will be selected by Public Libraries Victoria. Winners for the Local challenge will be selected by Melton City Libraries staff.

What are the bonus activities?

The bonus activities include fun challenges and prompts to get you thinking about your reading. Visit the library each time you finish a bonus activity to collect a reward! Choose from fun gadgets, stationery and more. Complete all the bonus activities for a second entry into the local prize draw. That’s another chance to win!

Do audiobooks and graphic novels count towards my reading log?

Yes!

What if I read more than 10 books?

Amazing work! While this won’t count towards your entry, we encourage you to read as many books as you like!

Do I have to read library books only?

No, you can read any book from anywhere!
