Title: The Stories That Connect Us
Year: 2023
Location: 1-9 Station Road, Melton South
Artwork Statement
For this project, ‘The Stories that Connect Us’, artist Candela Alconada was commissioned to create a mural which celebrates the connectedness and diversity within our community. Following on from the community mural painted in 2021, this artwork focuses on the connection between people and nature, the integration of younger and older generations and celebrates inclusion and diversity.
The illustration of an older woman with two children planting flowers is a metaphor for planting seeds together for a better future, while the character looking up at the stars speaks to the importance of nature to wellbeing. The main characters depicted in the mural are participating in conversation while they appreciate the beauty and magic of the butterfly. This imagery creates a space that celebrates different cultures, backgrounds and identity through the portrayal of stories, each of which is a reflection of the community it represents and is a reminder that everyone belongs and has a place in this community.
