Traces With History

Traces With History

CS Gallery May 16 – September 30

An exhibition by An Exhibition by Miguel Andy Villanueva

Traces with History aims to bring the viewer closer to a process of self-recognition and self-appreciation, particularly within a context defined by migration and exploration.   The portrait reveals much about who we are—our origins, culture, roots, identity, and potentially, where we are heading.  This artist explicitly addresses the Melton community, highlighting the migration stories, languages, and cultures that converge in this multicultural space. The choice of printmaking, with its accessible and direct origins, serves as a medium that fosters a sense of connection and engagement with the people it represents, celebrating the local cultural diversity.

The exhibition focuses on portraying the migrant population in Australia while also acknowledging the longstanding presence of the Indigenous peoples who have inhabited these lands for over 65,000 years.

Artist Statement

As a migrant, I find it easy to identify with others through their reasons for emigrating: the search for better living conditions, opportunities for personal development, and the desire to fulfil one's potential as a human being. While borders may be physical or established through international agreements, the inherent human need to move and adapt has existed since the earliest periods of our history.
