An exhibition by Chelsea Avila

Wednesday 20 March – Monday 2 September 2024

Pamilya: From Our Roots We Bloom delves into the rich tapestry of kinship through the lens of language. In this exhibition, local emerging artist Chelsea Avila aims to showcase how cultures, specifically Tagalog (Filipino), can use language to foster deep familial connections.

Drawing from personal experiences in a first-generation migrant household, Chelsea's collection emerged during high school while studying linguistics. Through watercolour and gouache, she captures the emotional essence of familial connections and explores emotions beyond the confines of the English language.

The exhibition aims to nurture a sense of global community in Melbourne's west, encouraging appreciation for cultural uniqueness and sparking a dialogue about the universal aspects of human connection.
