This is Freedom

Zofia Lickova Hero Image

An exhibition by Zofia Lickova

Friday 21 June – Monday 30 September 2024

Zofia Lickova's exhibition offers a captivating exploration of abstract art, unveiling her unique perspective on landscapes through geometric shapes. The artistic journey traverses three countries significant to her life: her upbringing in Slovakia, past experiences in Scotland, and her current settlement in Australia.

Working primarily with acrylics, This is Freedom invites viewers to delve into the beauty of colour palettes and experience a visual journey influenced by renowned abstract masters, from W. Kandinsky to the Cubism of Kazimir Malevich and Frantisek Kupka, as well as the expressionism of Lyonel Feininger.

Additionally, Zofia draws inspiration from her uncle, Blazej Balaz, an art professor at the university. The main message of the exhibition is to ignite local community interest in art and convey Zofia's personal belief that one doesn't need to be a professional to create the kind of paintings she produces—only imagination and a brush are required.

About Zofia Lickova

Zofia Lickova is primarily a self-taught artist with an inherent artistic seed that has always resided deep within her. While making occasional attempts at drawing and painting throughout her life, Zofia delved more intensely into her artistic pursuits when faced with the challenges brought on by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Inspired by nature, geometric shapes, and a myriad of colours, Zofia's artistic process is driven by an irresistible fascination with captivating colour combinations. This fascination compels her to replicate these hues at home, giving life to her abstract paintings and geometric landscapes.

Her artistic journey is marked by a deliberate and intuitive process. Some days, she begins with a clear idea in mind, while on others, the painting unfolds spontaneously, guided by intuition and opportunistic exploration. Zofia often experiments with various mediums, starting with soft pastels, a childhood gift that she has cherished over the years. Currently, she primarily works with acrylics, occasionally venturing into unexplored mediums.

Zofia's creative scope extends beyond painting to other art forms, such as lino-cutting and the revitalization of old furniture through recycling. With a deep aversion to waste and a minimalist approach to possession, Zofia embraces a philosophy of use, re-use, and recycle wherever possible.
