The innovative hub consists of approximately 3500 square metres over two levels and is located at 31 McKenzie St, Melton. The building:
- houses the library’s collection
- provides lifelong learning and community activity with flexible spaces to cater for large and small groups
- offers children’s programs and Maternal and Child Health services
- uses the latest in wireless connectivity and well equipped computer training rooms.
It features sustainable design and energy efficiency:
- a 5 Star Green Star accreditation from the Green Building Council of Australia
- sustainable building materials and energy efficient design to minimise heating and cooling costs
- it uses 52% less electricity
- 60% less gas
- 82% less water than with standard building practices
- and produces 45% less in greenhouse gas emissions.
The facility minimises environmental impact through:
- reduced light spillage
- filtered storm water discharge
- minimal noise pollution
- no ozone depleting insulation
- collection and reuse of rainwater (for toilets and watering the garden)
- plantings of indigenous, drought tolerant species to enhance the external aspects of the building.
Funding
- $4 million allocated through the second round of the Federal Government’s Regional Development Australia Fund (RDAF)
- $1.5 million from the State Government under the Living Libraries Infrastructure Fund and the Community Support fund
- $85,000 from Western Water under the Grant for Water Sustainable Urban Design program
Jobs
- 77 Full Time Equivalent (FTE) jobs during construction and 15 ongoing FTE jobs
- the training and business incubator helps to up-skill the community and provides opportunities for economic diversification
